Welcome to the 17th Workshop of the International Lithosphere Program ILP-Task Force VI on Sedimentary Basins:
Titled: Sustainability or Today for Tomorrow

Welcome,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the17th workshop of the International Lithosphere Program - Task Force VI on Sedimentary Basins. The aim of this workshop is to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration among the attendees, with the ultimate goal of advancing our understanding of sedimentary basins and their role in the broader geologic context.

This year workshop theme is ‘Today for Tomorrow’ and aligned with announcement by The United Arab Emirates President HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the year of sustainability.

We welcome presentations on various topics related to applications of geosciences to resolve societal challenges such as natural hazards, energy transition, and environmental issues.

We are pleased to announce that Khalifa University and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates in partnership with the International Lithosphere Program in sedimentary basins (ILP) will organize the 17 th workshop of the Lithosphere International Program on December 5 th to 6 th , 2023 in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates.

This workshop provides a platform to explore and discuss the different aspects of crustal evolution through different geoscientific approaches. The workshop, which is held annually in distinct geological regions, attracts a substantial number of scientists and specialists from around the world.

We welcome presentations on various topics related to applications of geosciences to resolve societal challenges such as natural hazards, energy transition, and environmental issues.

The workshop will be in-person attendance for 2 days in addition to two optional field trips (pre and post the workshop)

The International Lithosphere Program (ILP) seeks to elucidate the nature, dynamics, origin and evolution of the lithosphere through international, multidisciplinary geoscience research projects and coordinating committees.

The ILP is charged with promoting multidisciplinary research projects of interest to both the geological (IUGS) and geophysical (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics - IUGG) communities.

The ILP seeks to achieve a fine balance between: "addressing societal needs", e.g. understanding natural catastrophes and other solid earth processes that affect the biosphere, providing information for improved resource exploration and environmental protection; and "satisfying scientific curiosity".

The ILP was established in 1980 by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) at the request of the IUGS and the IUGG.

In line with the plan of merging the Ministries of the Infrastructure Development and Energy and to join the Sheikh Zayed Housing Program and the Federal Land and Maritime Transport Authority to the new Ministry, as well as the needs and aspirations of the community groups, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure implements a strategic plan aiming, in its entirety, to organize, develop and enhance the competitiveness of the UAE in the sectors of energy, mining, water resources and land and sea transportation, roads, utilities, housing, building and construction and in investment sustainability, as well as optimizing the partnerships, technology and advanced sciences, in addition to adopting global innovative solutions to improve the quality of the society's life.

This plan is considered a roadmap for a new phase of comprehensive development in accordance with the vision of the future government, which contributes to the government’s efforts to achieve the goals of the next fifty years, reaching to the UAE Centennial 2071, and pushing the national economy to achieve global leadership, in addition to ensuring the provision of distinguished services to customers that have been designed in accordance with quality standards, efficiency, and transparency.
